The Story, So Far...
Mother Hicks is a story of three people: Girl, an orphan without a name, passed around from
family to family, Tuc, a boy, deaf from birth, largely ignored by the community, who acts as a
narrator, and Mother Hicks, a woman versed in healing who is called a witch when someone
dies under her care. The story takes place in the 1930's where's Girl's search for a permanent
home leads her to butt heads with many of the townspeople. Eventually, she decides to take
up witchcraft as a way to make her strong. Unfortunately, Mother Hicks is blamed.
When Girl becomes sick, Mother Hicks takes her in and heals her, however, the town's pre
-judices lead them to believe she was kidnapped. All the while, Tuc (Who lives with Hicks),
is the narrator and silent guardian of the group.
It's a very dramatic piece about how prejudice and superstition can affect the lives of inno
-cents.
